This gracefully sweeping pattern in restrained colours is typical of the style of Solo. The town even today has a quiet other-worldly feel to it, without (yet) the mad traffic of many other cities of Java. And its royal palaces preserve a discreet calm and elegance. But how much of the pleasure of the visitor derives from the relative poverty of the town's inhabitants?
