Joseph Stefano, a thirty-eight-year-old [in 1959] former lyricist-composer had harbored no writing aspirations outside of music. Then, he had watched a live telecast of 'Playhouse 90', at the time a leading showcase for promising playwrights, directors, and actors. Stefano wrote a one-hour teleplay and within two weeks, the boss of a secretary friend had made a deal for for him with [producer] Carlo Ponti.
Stefano won respectable notices for his first produced screenplay for Ponti, 'The Black Orchid', a moonlight and Mafia soap opera, released by Paramount, starring Anthony Quinn and Sophia Loren. He also won awards for his own 'Playhouse 90' script, 'Made in Japan', also a relationship story. He was offered a seven year contract at 20th Century Fox. He then abandoned his music career and moved west.
Stefano was unhappy with his first assignment: "A Sam Engle production called 'A Machine for Chuparosa' and got released from his contract with Fox. Fox immediately hired him to adapt a J.R. Salamanca novel "The Lost Country"; originally intended to star Anthony Perkins. Perkins didn't make the movie, which was done as "Wild in the Country" with Elvis Presley (from a script by Clifford Odetts.)
Stefano then moved to MCA, where his agent, Ned Brown, had acquired 'Psycho' for Alfred Hitchcock. Stefano was originally rejected unseen by Hitchcock as the writer for fear that he didn't have a sense of humour. Pressure was put on Hitchcock by a lot of influential people to meet Stefano. Needless to say, he got the job, and his career never looked back.
