An unappreciated mass market can spell doom for even the best of the action figure lines. Kenner's Swamp Thing line was one of the all-time greats. There was nothing that this line lacked in the way of action figure appeal; ingenious action features, great sculpting, thermo-chromatic paint (on one version of Swamp Thing), glow-in-the-dark eyes (on all bad guys), silicon rubber masks that double as finger puppets, great playsets & unique vehicles. What it lacked was exactly what killed it in the end; accessible media backing. Neither the two live-action movies on HBO, or the live-action series on the USA Network, were widely available to most kids. Cable was not as widely distributed in 1991 as it is now. Additionally, the animated, which the figures are actually designed after, enjoyed only scattered distribution by whatever independent networks picked it up. The VHS tape, designed to help focus a confused market on the toy product, was lost in the relatively new territory of toy store video displays.
