Producing a list of Dempster churchmen of all sorts was a rather daunting task, not because of a lack of information - there is plenty of that - but because of the additional task of having to try to explain the various splits in Scottish churches over the centuries. The notes attempt to do this, but space is limited, and there are still splits going on. Generally, if there is no immediate denomination as the first entry in the description, the person can be assumed to be of the main Scottish church of the era. Roman Catholic before 1560 and Church of Scotland thereafter.
