The Great Index: Introduction

The Great Index is one of the main reasons why I set about producing this site. As it currently stands I have several thousand Dempster events (births, marriages and deaths) recorded on paper, covering all of England and most of Scotland. Having seen tantalising glimpses of new connections which could be made if the list was computerised, I set about that task. With the advent of spreadsheet packages that will produce instant HTML, I decided to make use of my web space and this is the result.

Currently there is one file which covers just about all my information on Dempsters in England. It is sorted by First Name, Date and County (pre-1975 county names being used). Be warned, it is a BIG file and I have not managed to squeeze it all in horizontally, so a bit of scrolling is needed.

For those of you with access to spreadsheet packages, I have the details of the great index available as a comma delimited ascii file. This is a good deal smaller and should be compatible with most spreadsheets. My web space doesn't have full FTP facilities, but the link below should allow you to download a zipped version of the file, which should be saved to disk rather than viewed. If you have any problems, then I can email the csv file.
