Cofferidge Close is a small complex of shops & offices within the old coaching town of Stony Stratford. Milton Keynes Parks Trust have initiated a series of vitreous enamel signs as part of a general refurbishment of the building. These signs are to reflect the area's rich history & may be cut to various shapes. A small explanation panel with text will be fixed to the brick pier below. |
Stony Stratford's last stage coach, Circa 1850. The opening of the Euston to Denbigh Railway line on April 9th abruptly ended Stony Stratford's stage coach era. By 1844 the number of coaches passing through Stony Stratford dropped from 280 to 12 a week. Pictured above is the Wolverton- Buckingham-Banbury mail coach, probably the very last working coach to pass through the High Street. From 1838 this coach would have collected the London mail, via the London & Birmingham Railway at Wolverton Station, and returned through Stony Stratford to Buckingham and on to Banbury. In 1850 the Buckinghamshire Railway was built replacing this service. |
Stony Stratford Tokens, Early C18th. Local tradesman often issued their own tokens, generally to the value of one farthing, due to a shortage of official money of such a low denomination. These brass farthings remained in widespread use until the government minted sufficient real farthings to satisfy demand. |
