The IADCH was set up in August 1999 to specifically develop a professional body for hypnotherapists that had reached doctorate level of education in their chosen profession of clinical hypnotherapy.
Criteria of Membership:
1. The association is a non-profit organisation that is run for the promotion of academic study and clinical excellence within the field of clinical and experimental hypnotherapy pertaining to hypnotherapy, medicine, dentistry, psychology, psychotherapy, counselling, and the promotion of standards in the field of clinical hypnotherapy. The association further promotes standards of care for the therapeutic practice of hypnosis in order to protect the general public.
2. Doctorates and institutions where those doctorates have been attained are reviewed by the membership committee to be deemed acceptable.
3. Part of the doctorate must have involved a degree of research into the field of hypnotherapy. Or the individual may apply to the membership committee to have further research in the field of hypnotherapy considered by the board in addition to their doctorate.
4. Membership is only open to those practitioners who have taken a doctorate degree in the field of clinical hypnotherapy. A degree in medicine or psychology would not qualify an individual for membership.
5. Membership fees will be set annually by the committee.
6. Alteration of clauses set out for running of the association may only be sanctioned by the governing board and in accordance with a majority vote of the full members.
7. Presidents may only serve a maximum term of five years and after the initial five years must be voted in every five years by a full voting members’ ballot.
8. Administration and secretarial posts must also be appointed by the board and then voted in for a five year term by the full voting members.
9. No member is allowed to be involved in the practice of stage hypnosis, teach such a subject or work with entertainers in that field. Neither can a member take students who are involved in the practice of stage hypnosis.
10. Association members who are studying for a doctorate in the field of clinical hypnosis may be allowed to join, but may not use a public declaration that may be misleading to the public that they are full members.
11. A member applying for full membership must have completed at least 500 hours of practical face-to-face tuition within the classroom environment in studying in the field of clinical hypnotherapy on top of academic studies.
12. A member applying for full membership must have completed at least two years of clinical supervision at two hours per month with a recognised clinical hypnotherapist.
13. A member must remain in at least one and one half hours per month of clinical supervision or peer supervision through their career thereafter.
14. Members must continue in practice as a clinical hypnotherapist throughout their membership, unless retired or in a teaching position in the field of clinical hypnotherapy.
15. No member may be involved in the promotion of hypnosis for the field of selling or commercial gain.
16. Any member bringing the association into disrepute would be subject to disciplinary review by the membership committee.
17. All members have the right to appeal to an independent board set up to deal with appeals concerning membership, the members of which must be agreeable to both parties.
18. The membership designation of IADCH does not constitute a qualification in itself but is merely an indication that the member belongs to the association.
19. The association is principly an international body for the promotion of the field of clinical hypnotherapy, but members may establish subdivisions according to the countries they practise in and thereby gain recognition for that subdivision within their own countries.
20. These sub-associations would also list any societies, associations or affiliations with which they had formed affiliations.
21. Names and details of members’ qualifications will be available to members of the public upon request or through membership lists.
Since the association is presently being set up by the founding member Dr Tracie O’Keefe DCH (Doctor of Clinical Hypnotherapy) new members are invited to contribute to the initial formation of the association.
