People turn up at my practice with all sorts of phobias: fear of flying, lifts, going underground, heights, open spaces, closed spaces, insects, dogs, cats, relationships and so on. In fact, a phobia can take many forms and a person can become phobic of almost anything.
The phobic reaction is an inappropriate response to a stimulus that was at one time an appropriate response to a situation. However, the old response is now no longer appropriate to present-day situations. Of course, people come in saying they don’t know why they’re phobic, but at a deep unconscious level, they do. Without even delving to that extremely deep unconscious level, phobias can be alleviated quickly with hypnosis, systematic desensitisation, reframing, and lots of ego-strengthening.
A thing is only hard to do when you don’t know how to do it, or not how to do it, or you don’t know how to not know how to do it.
