In the first ever book to provide an in-depth investigation into the world of stage
hypnosis, Tracie O'Keefe examines the devastating side effects suffered by some
volunteers. The material for the book comes from her doctoral thesis with the American
Institute of Hypnotherapy.
In the clinical use of hypnosis, the techniques of going into a trance and being guided
by a hypnotist are regulated, monitored and created in a gentle and professional manner.
However, after having seen several stage hypnosis shows, Tracie became disturbed about
the abuses she believed volunteers often experienced. Some of them complained of suffering
from headaches, psychosis, blackouts, depression; others told of physical injuries that
occurred from this dangerous and unregulated use of hypnosis. In the case of Sharron
Tabarn, death may have been the ultimate price she paid for an evening's entertainment.
Investigating Stage Hypnosis includes theories and experts' opinions. It gives first-hand
accounts from the victims themselves about their traumas and the battles they have to get
legal compensation. The death of Sharron Tabarn is reviewed and questions are asked as to
whether the hypnotist concerned should have been prosecuted.
When Tracie first looked into the acceptability of stage hypnosis, she wrote a letter
to a clinical journal, complaining that those who practise it do not follow the kind of
ethical guidelines that the vast majority of those in the hypnotherapy profession do.
This letter prompted a writ for libel to be issued against her by one of England's most
famous stage hypnotists. Now, having spent two years researching stage hypnosis, this
book brings to the public and health professionals, in plain language, an understanding
that allows the reader to decide for themselves.
