Guide to the
Chancai Trade Centre Compiled and Edited by Mark Newbold Located in the Yatchrare System, the central system
in the sprawling Setnin Sector and
a major spine of trade and commerce, the Chancai
Trade Centre is the capital city of the planet Zelon. Founded over eight hundred years ago and built
upon the site where ancient Zelonians first held their markets almost five
thousand years before, Chancai is home to almost fifteen million inhabitants
and is one of the prime trade areas in the Mid-Rim. Chancai dictates
trade prices for Setnin and many other local sectors, exerting an iron grip
on commerce in the locality. Sitting in the bowl of
the Tuca Mountains that surround
the greater Mutumbarr Lake region,
Chancai is an expansive trade area that comprises of three sections - the
main building of Chancai itself that houses 243,500 units, the ground level
sprawl of Fringe-Mall and the
population area of Sub City
spreading out from the city towards the forest. Twenty-seven levels high, with each level sub-divided into four
mini-levels and each level split into the classy Sector One (Northside)
and the seedier Sector Two (Southside), Chancai reaches far into
the atmosphere, where atmospheric control systems service the higher levels
of the city. Docking bays fill the
inner areas of the four-sided, pyramid-shaped construction, spread around the
massive central shaft, which cuts through the centre of the building allowing
access to each level. Each corner of
the centre has a smaller shaft that serves as an overflow for the larger
central shaft and allows access to the outer lying docking bays. Interconnected by a series of access bays,
which thread through each level, Chancai has tens of thousands of starships
docked there at all times. Each level
is serviced by this blood supply of ships, sending hundreds of thousands of
customers to the many thousands of outlets that fill the trade centre. As well as commerce and
trade, Chancai is a noted location for connoisseurs of fashion, cuisine and
the arts. Built on the very top of
the Trade Centre sits the Stratosphere Towers Jive Room and Grill, a
fifty meter tall structure that rises above the centre and offers an even
greater view of the Mutumbarr Lake region.
For the most affluent customers only, the Stratosphere costs a fortune
to dine in, and requires a thirty thousand credits a year membership to enter
the premises. Also, on Level 13 is
the Arfenlaw Arena, a grand, horseshoe shaped arena highlighting the
ancient plays and shows of days past. Most of the sectors
major businesses, gangsters and criminals ran their operations through the
trade centre, including Jabba the
Hutt, Mister Spyte, Dressel, Geon Tasar,
Gale Fender and primarily Glann
Cipple. Almost every major
conglomerate and corporation had an outlet on Chancai and many like the Zythlies Dropout Parlour chain and the Red Star Hotel
Group had branches on almost every level. Prime starship manufacturers like the Desando Dynamics Corporation, the Assallam Astronautics Group and the Shipyards of Zelon had yards on the east side of the city, and
the huge landing platform to the south-east of the city, one of the largest
in the sector, housed many hundreds of starships at a time. During the time of the Galactic Empire Chancai was one of
the primary sources of funding for Imperial operations throughout the Setnin
and local sectors. A seventy-five
percent tax levy was heaped upon the occupants of the city during the Galactic Civil War, fuelling the
Imperial war effort. Throughout this, Chancai retained its neutrality,
despite the cloying presence of Imperial troops and garrisons appearing on
every other level. Grand Moff Den Treece chose Chancai
to be his seat of power during his time as Moff and through his efforts the
tax bleed funded most of the Empires projects, such as the prototype Imperial Super Star Destroyer Revenger
and the S.I.E. Fighter. After the fall of the
Empire and Setnins readmission to the Republic, Chancai
flourished. But during the days of
the Galactic Alliance and the Ki-Ki /Setnin War it became a
target for Ki-Ki aggression and eventually fell to the Ki-Kis superior
forces, hammered and pummelled into submission and heavily damaged. Fringe-mall was almost totally destroyed,
and huge sections of Chancai itself were hit. Once again, Chancai was at the epicentre of Setnin life. Living in a constant
state of construction, Chancai has far surpassed the limits set down by the
Zelonian government over one hundred years previously.
Since then, another five levels have been added, bringing the total up
to twenty-seven and the huge expanse of Fringe-Mall has threaded its way
through the jungles. Planning
application for new premises is rarely refused - the local tribes and
indigenous people are disenfranchised and have no say in what happens to them

the forced relocation of many native Zelonian tribes, including the Niekon tribe who had lived in and around the Tuca Mountains
for thousands of years and whose ancestors originally traded on the very site
where Chancai is built. Sub City - Home to the fifteen million inhabitants of Chancai. A vast metropolitan area, Sub City is,
much like Chancai itself, divided into areas of wealth and class. Despite these distinctions, Sub City is a
beautiful and rewarding place to live. Starship Yards - Situated on the east side of the Chancai Trade Centre the starship yards are notable for many famous design projects. Pod Racing Track - Winding through the surrounding Mutumbarr Lake
forest and regions, the Pod Racing track saw much use in Imperial days as a swoop and speeder track. In
days past the track was used for Pod Racing until the sport became less
popular in the sector. |
