Jonathan Hicks

Jonathan Hicks was born in Lichfield, England and works there as a Technical Advisor for Irmscher UK, a vehicle body styling company. He has also worked as a shop assistant, a bathroom salesman, a church pipe-organ tuner, a printer and a car valeter.

Jonathan’s interest in science fiction stems from his older brothers who had always been very inquisitive in all kinds of pastimes. His first main exposure to the genre was through the original British release of Star Wars in 1978, and then had a passing interest in all things sci-fi and fantasy for the years following. After meeting up with other fanatics and then falling into the world of role-playing he discovered he could work at being creative and have fun at the same time. Only in recent years has he tried to make something of his own material and creations and has too many rejections from publishers to count.

Surprisingly, his favourite film is The Usual Suspects, followed closely by Alien, the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Matrix. The Star Wars films follow closely with The Empire Strikes Back as his favourite. He does feel that the Star Wars genre is the most creative he has come across and finds it very accessible, hence the sixteen years worth of role-playing he has done in the galaxy and the amount of stories and visuals he has created.

His first dive into the literary Star Wars world came in the early 1980’s with a rather sorry attempt called Return of the Jedi - Two, which chronicled the not-yet decided further adventures of Han, Luke and Leia - and Grand Moff Tarkin! The story, although less than a thousand words long, still exists and is to Jonathan what the Star Wars Holiday Special is to George Lucas. After that there followed recorded dramatisations with Mark Newbold, detailing the goings on in the fledgling Setnin Sector.

The role-playing era was where the most creativity came from, with Jonathan running games not only for Star Wars but many other genres including fantasy and horror. With the sheer scope of Star Wars and the amount of freedom given they managed to create a place where all the main characters could dwell, adding depth and personality to the sector.

Jonathan still lives in his apartment in Lichfield, which he shares with his computer, games console and large film and book collection including over 200 DVD's. He still games occasionally with Andrew Curtis,  so don’t give him any lip.
