Sherwood Colliery shine to the end (cont.)
Saturday 13th June saw the team compete against some very strong opposition at Eckington Pool as guests of Dronfield Dolphins SC in their annual trophy gala.
They finished second on the night behind a talented Rotherham Metro SC squad but there were many pleasing performances from the Sherwood team. Individual wins from Chloe Adlington (free), Aimee Bell (breast), Chris Perks (back), Mark Shilton (breast), Oliver Novell (fly), Ash Cooper (free) and Mark White (breast) added to the excitement as did the relay wins by the boys' 12yrs free and boys' 14 yrs free and medley teams. Team coach Ian Negus was delighted that the swimmers had stayed in close contention with Rotherham Metro throughout the gala.
Gala Result Rotherham Metro 249, Sherwood Colliery 223, Dronfield 197,
Eckington 178, Burton 131.
The following day, Sherwood's youngsters were back at Eckington when they competed in the 'B' final of the Derby and Notts League. Sherwood's junior team won the gala easily despite the presence of strong teams from Derby Phoenix and Carlton Forum. The girls were in fine form with relay victories for the 9yrs medley team and the 11yrs free and medley teams and the 12yrs free and medley teams. Individual victories were gained by Kerry Lawson (free), Kathryn Fowkes (fly and free), Kate Porter (back), Chris Perks (free and back), Mark Porter (breast), Chris Sansom (free) and Matt Roper (free).
Gala Result Sherwood Colliery 199, Derby Phoenix 167,
Worksop Dolphins 144, Carlton Forum 143, Etwall Eagles 143, Buxton 86.
The 'B' final victory put Sherwood in 7th place overall in the final league table.
Sherwood's final swim before the summer break was at Balderton Leisure Centre in Newark SC's annual trophy gala. The gala is always very competitive and great fun as the majority of the swims are relays and the individual swims are "pulled out of the hat" on the night. Sherwood Colliery took the lead from the first event and never relinquished it throughout the gala although Falcon ASC came very close midway in the evening. Once again the girls' 11yrs free and medley team (Laura Adlington, Kelly Hall, Sophie Loker and Kate Porter) and the girls' 14yrs free and medley team (Chloe Adlington, Aimee Bell, Kayliegh Boyall and Katie Loker) swept all before them with some really gritty swims.
Sherwood won the gala by 12 points ahead of last years winners Falcon ASC and some way ahead of the other teams competing, Newark, Southwell, Rykneld and Kimberley.
