The Department offers a BSc (Hons) degree in diagnostic or therapeutic radiography. The scheme involves academic study at the University and periods on clinical placement. Our clinical placements are within the North London and Hertfordshire area, as well as a few placements in Bedfordshire. Graduates are eligible for state registration as radiographers and for membership of the Society of Radiographers. At postgraduate level we are involved in two major schemes. An MSc in Medical Imaging Science, which has three routes, ultrasound, magnetic resonance (in collaboration with the Oxford MRI Centre) and radio nuclide imaging. We collaborate with the School of Natural Sciences by contributing to an MSc with the named routes in Radiography ( Diagnostic or Radiotherapeutic ). We have just developed a short course in Radiographic Reporting. Other short courses which are held include:- Facilitation of Work Based Learning, Radiation Protection Supervisors' Certificate, and the Certificate in Mammography
We are a relatively new discipline in the University and we are building up our research portfolio. Currently, we have two externally funded projects. The College of Radiographers and the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine are sponsoring a project in curriculum development in radiography. The Medical Research Council and North Thames RHA are funding a project which is investigating the relationship between radiation dose and image quality in neo-natal chest radiography.
