Overview
Our undergraduate course leads to a Honours Degree in Radiography and can be undertaken in two routes, Diagnostic or Theurapeutic. Both courses are undertaken over three years and involve working within an hospital under supervision as well as undertaking lectures at the University.
Clinical education is an integral part of the programme, with placements arranged in district general and teaching hospitals in London, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. The degree is recognised for state registration and as an honours graduate you will be able to start your career without further training.
The course commences in October each year and presently students undertake basic skills learning within the University to provide a broad base to commence their practical training within their chosen hospital sites.
The University has its own x-ray laboratory and computer suite, with a wide range of software and imaging abilities. Students will be able to obtain training in basic techniques within the University and take their new knowledge to the Hospitals they will be working.
The course takes the form of a modular scheme and each module has its own method of assessment from practical sessions to written examinations.
Role of the Radiographer
Radiography is a demanding and rewarding hospital career. Practitioners need extensive technical expertise as well as a sympathetic understanding of the patients in their care. We offer an honors degree programme which prepares students to become radiographers in the expanding fields of diagnostic or therapeutic radiography.
Diagnostic radiographers produce images which assist in the diagnosis and treatment of disease and injury. Your expertise will be put to use in producing images using x-rays, computed tomography, radionuclide imaging, ultrasound and the latest technique of magnetic resonance imaging.
As a therapeutic radiographer you will use radiation to treat patients with cancer. You must understand the disease and you will be involved in the preparation, computer planning and delivery of treatment, which demands a high level of skill and accuracy.
Course design
The course is designed so that in your first year you study subjects that will underpin your understanding of clinical practice as either a diagnostic or therapeutic radiographer. The topics covered include aspects of physical, biological and social sciences, as well as psychology. You will also study the fundamentals of diagnostic or therapeutic radiography.
Years two and three will focus on the understanding and application of modern imaging and treatment techniques, provide an introduction to research and enable you to carry out an independent study of your own choice.
This course has been designed in collaboration with clinical radiographers and other health service managers not only to meet the demands of a rapidly changing health service, but to lay the foundation for your ongoing personal and professional development as well as ensuring your employment in the career of your choice.
