Edie was born in Hull (neé Davidson, originally Davidovich), the second of three sisters (after Sophie and before Minnie). She also had six brothers, Moishe, Joe, Geoff, Lammie, Cyril and Lionel. We are Jewish and in the 1930s, the three sisters were involved in the Zionist movement in south London and it was here that Sophie, Edie and Minnie met Ziggie, Charlie and Bernie Noble and married them respectively - three brides for three brothers. Thus the Davidson clan married into the Noble clan to create the Davnobs, a close-knit family who started our own family magazine Davnob in the late 1950s. The latest version is now online.

Born into such a large family in relatively poor circumstances, Edie had to leave Hull Grammar School after a year, having won a scholarship entrance and, like most of her brothers and sisters, got a job in clothes retailing. While my sisters Susan, Judy and I were growing up, Edie helped Charlie run his children's wear shop, Noble's of Thornton Heath (a.k.a. The Kiddies' Shop). But she also became involved in Jewish affairs, firstly on the committee of our local schul, South London Liberal Jewish Synagogue, and later in the League of Jewish Women for which she was eventually President. She is also Honorary Life President of her local branch of the LJW. At the ripe young age of 86 (her birthday coinciding with the creation of this page), Edie still attends international conferences on behalf of the League, the latest being in Paris a few months ago.
