There are three main ways in wich cyclopentadienyl compounds are synthesised 1.Metal salt and cyclopentadienyl reagent
Cyclopentadienyl sodium is the most common reagent for the introduction of cyclopentadienyl ligands.
First the cyclopentadienyl ragent has to be generated by a retro-diels alder reaction of dycyclopentadiene. It can then beprtonated using a strong base (NaH or Na).
The the negatively charged cyclopentadienyl compound can then be compbined with the the desired metal salt.
2/ Metal salt and cyclopentadiene
In certain cases the cyclopentadienyl salt can be generated at the same time as reacting with the metal salt with the presence of a base.
3/ Metal and cyclopentadiene
The less electro positive metals can react directly with cyclopentadiene. Such methods require elevated temperatures in a method known as cocondensation.
If the first row alkali metals are used they tend to form the cyclopentadielnyl salt.
All methods are used in the synthesis of cyclopentadienyl complexes depending on the metal involved. However such metods can also be used with cyclopentadienyl already that already have other ligans attached to it.
