The Lute in Europe

The first illustration of the lute in Europe is to be found in the Cantigas de Santa Maria - a collection of manuscripts containing sacred music compiled by Alfonso X around the year 1270. The earliest European representation of the lute. This is an arabic instrument without question. It could have been a copy, of course, but we do not know whether european craftsmen possessed the necessary skills.
