Millennium Madness The turn of the Millennium isn't on the horizon. It happened over ten years ago. At least, that's the viewpoint of one American church. The 19th Modern Church of the Exaggerated Spirit in Pendulum, Alabama insist that, according to their calculations, the new Millennium began on February 11th, 1986. "It's quite simple!", proclaims Woodrow Crudd, founder of the Church and presenter of daily show Biblebabble on cable channel The God Network. "Both the third Millennium and the 21st century began on that date, at 2pm Eastern Standard time." Crudd's theory may seem wacky to some, but he insists that it has been confirmed by leading academics. "We spoke to the leading theologians and scientists in the country, and they all came back to us and said 'darn, you're right!'. A professor at Washington State University worked through the calculations ten times and he said he was sure there was no mistake." Woodrow's followers need no such approval to convince them of the theory's authenticity. "I knew as soon as he said it, that it must be true," said churchmember and fan Emmell Melmerle, who along with his wife, six daughters and goat, never miss the show. "We've already cancelled our plans for the year 2000, and when the celebrations come we'll be at our bedroom window throwing hammers at the crowds." So what is the basis for the Church's theory? Crudd intends to reveal all. "This is too important to keep quiet - the word must be spread! I will tell the public why this is true on a two-hour cable special on TGN next month. So call 1-900-NEAR2GOD now to subscribe to Jesus's favourite cable channel... TGN!" All major credit cards accepted. Service may involve a long call. |
