September - Danny
Kane, with assistance from
John
Braithwaite, striped the
telescope of it's white paint, restoring the telescope
back to it's original brass finish. September - during this month the
complete interior of the observatory, with the exception
of the dome, was repainted by Danny
Kane - assisted by Joe
Getchell, Nick Portwin and George
McCue. At the same time
John
Braithwaite carried out a
few minor alterations to the refurbishment carried out
earlier in the year. October 4th -Reopening of Airdrie
Public Observatory by Prof. John Brown (Astronomer Royal
for Scotland). October 5th - Airdrie Public
Observatory open day. Various activities including
exhibit from the Royal Observatory of
Edinburgh. 1997
June 7th - Airdrie
Public Observatory Open Day during the Airdrie Festival
held in June. August 1st -
Duncan Lunan resigns as Assistant Curator.
Danny
Kane
accepts the position as Assistant Curator. September 21st -
Airdrie Public Observatory Open Day. The observatory
opened to the public during the 'Open Doors' event
arranged to open public buildings during
Sunday. October 4th -
Airdrie Public Observatory Open Day. The observatory
opened to the public as part of the North Lanarkshire
Festival. 1998 March 27th - The
original telescope is displayed mounted onto a replica stand
constructed by Danny
Kane,
Assistant Curator.![]()

Mechanical drive overhauled
by Danny
Kane, Vice President of
ASTRA. During this period the dome mechanism was also
overhauled by Danny Kane and Oscar
Schwiglhofer.
Three exhibitions were held
at the Weavers Cottage Museum during the summer months as
part of the 100th anniversary celebrations for the
observatory. Moon-Rock and computer graphics were also
exhibited at the observatory's open-day, during the
Airdrie Festival, as part of the 100th anniversary
celebrations for the observatory.
Cooke telescope received an
overhaul which was carried out by John
Braithwaite, who is an
ASTRA member and Scotland's only telescope
manufacturer.
During the month of March
the overhaul to the telescope was completed, ready for
the transfer of ownership from Monklands District Council
to North Lanarkshire Council on April 5th - as part of
the reorganisation of local government.
March 17th
to April 4th - Hale-Bopp public watches at Airdrie Public
Observatory.
