Jan.25. Kit Weinrichter represents ASTRA at JPL during Voyager 2 flyby of Uranus (report in Spacereport, Easter 86). Ayrshire branch holds 'Burns Uranus' night, celebrating flyby and Robert Burns's birthday. Poem by Gordon Dick (now known as Gordon Ross), vindaloo haggis by Kenny Bradshaw.

Feb.1. First meeting of Starseed discussion project, chaired by Neil Strachan, hosted by Neil & Joyce Craig at 27 Woodlands Drive, Glasgow.

Feb.10. Repairs begun to Airdrie Public Observatory telescope after damage in a break-in.

Feb.24. ASTRA files and photos returned to Glasgow from Largs.

March. ASTRA membership breaks 100 for the first time.

Waverider wind-tunnel tests at Mach 2.4 conducted by Gordon Dick (now known as Gordon Ross) and Kenny Bradshaw, at Royal College of Military Science, Shrivenham, by courtesy of British Aerospace.

Mar.28-31. Albacon III, Eastercon 86. ASTRA mounts exhibition and spaceflight programme, including panel 'Where are the extraterrestrials?', Voyager-Uranus and Halley's Comet lectures, (Oscar produces Spacereports on both), Waverider presentation, panels on space stations and on the role of amateur societies. Guest of Honour was Joe Haldeman.

April. Colour report on Waverider project in The Scotsman Magazine.

Apr.7-12. 25 Years of Manned Spaceflight exhibition at Glasgow Film Theatre, with talks after SF films. Apr.7, Duncan Lunan 'Extraterrestrial Life' after Alien and Planet of the Apes; Apr.11, Chris Boyce, 'Bioengineering and Artificial Intelligence', after Bladerunner and THX 1138; Apr.12 (Gagarin anniversary), Duncan Lunan, '25 Years of Manned Spaceflight', after The Right Stuff, followed by Annual Dinner and Presidential Toast at the Bank Restaurant, Queen Street. (Same day), Gordon Dick (now known as Gordon Ross) and Kenny Bradshaw, 'Mach 2 in a Built-up Area', report on Shrivenham wind-tunnel tests, Flatt Road, Community Centre, Largs.

Apr.25-May 2. Halley's Comet Watch (also Mir and Salyut 7) at Airdrie Public Observatory.

May 16. ASTRA exhibition at Theatre Royal to accompany Halley's Comet lecture by Patrick Moore and John Mason.

May 23-26. Duncan Lunan speaking at Space Development Conference, Seattle. 'Meet ASTRA' session technically the first US ASTRA meeting?

July 4-6. Westercon SF convention, San Diego. Hal and Dorothy Heydt host ASTRA room party. Before this I had visited Jim Randolph and Chris Purves at JPL, and at their request I now visited Joe Carroll at Energy Services Laboratory in San Diego, leading to a suggested re-entry test of Waverider by tether launch from the Space Shuttle.

July 18-20. ASTRA exhibition and speakers at Triple-S Con at North East London Polytechnic. Guest of Honour Roy Gibson agrees to represent us in negotiations with NASA on re-entry test of Waverider (see July 88 SPACEREPORT).

July 27-30. ASTRA participation in Brisbane Queen Festival Week, Largs: aquajet demonstration, and prize-winning entry in car float competition.

Aug.22-25. First Scottish Rocket Weekend at Kelburn Country Centre.

Sept.26. Oscar Schwiglhofer begins production of 'International Spacereport' newsletters on Peter Dawson's computer.

Sept.26-29. Xiicon SF convention, Glasgow, with ASTRA exhibition and spaceflight programme, including panel discussions 'Wings into Space', 'Halfway to Anywhere', 'The Orbiting Hotel'; Delphi exercise by Neil Strachan.

Sept.27. Oscar produces the 'phantom issue' of Spacereport, distributed only to branch organisers.

Oct.4. Sputnik Anniversary Lecture, at Glasgow University Dept. of Adult & Continuing Education: Prof. Graham Cairns-Smith, 'Designs for Replicators'.

Nov.1. PARSEC discussion, George Service House, University Gardens, Glasgow, on amateur space research conference proposed by John Bonsor.

December. Renfrew & District Branch (Paisley) produces first of two issues of Newsletter.
