January. Publications committee formed: Oscar Schwiglhofer, Duncan Lunan, Chris O'Kane. Chris becomes editor of Space- report, Oscar continues to produce 'International Spacereport' as technical supplements (available for a small fee), also astronomy supplements based on 'The Sky Above You' (see 1983). By a careful count of issues produced over the years, the Jan.87 Spacereport issue became vol.7 no.1.

Jan.10. 'Wind Power and the NASA Connection', by Peter Jamieson of James Howden & Son, at Glasgow University Engineering Dept.

Jan.13. Council approves Andrew Matthewman's proposal to reform London Branch.

Jan.24. 'Disaster in Space', hosted by Robert Law in Foxbar, Paisley. The programme now included monthly meetings of the Renfrew and District Branch.

Feb.18. Ayrshire Branch evening in the Shieling, with speaker Ed Buckley.

Feb.21. Gordon Dick (now known as Gordon Ross) stands down as President; Bill Ramsay elected.

Mar.21. Robert Law stands down from ASTRA Council, as later do Joyce Craig and Peter Dawson. Paisley Branch suspended. Duncan Lunan takes over from Robert as Assistant Curator of Airdrie Public Observatory (Oscar still Senior Curator).

April. James Voller proposes to set up Liverpool branch; this was not successful and was suspended.

- Monklands District Council votes £400 annually for speakers at Airdrie.

May 2. AGM at Central Hotel, Glasgow, being used for meetings in run-up to Albacon 87. Richard Newlands and Jim Shaw elected to Council.

May 23-25. Participation in Paisley Rocket Weekend. Pyrotechnic firings on Gleniffer Braes, aquajets in St. James's Park.

May 30. Open Day at Airdrie Public Observatory during Monklands Festival; display of Moonrock on loan from British National Space Centre, seen by over 300 people.

- First meeting of new London Branch.

June 19-21. Albacon 87. ASTRA spaceflight programme includes talks by Gordon Dick (now known as Gordon Ross), Andy Nimmo, Duncan Lunan; panels on 'Britain and Europe in Space' and on 'Colonising the Galaxy'. Guest of Honour David Brin.

July 26,29. Aquajets and car float in Brisbane Queen Festival, again winning prize.

- Teddy Bear rocket flight at Kelburn Country Centre Teddy Bears' Picnic.

Aug.21-24. Scottish Rocket Weekend, Kelburn Country Centre. Pat Jones of Big Bear Lake presented the Victor Hirt Trophy.

Aug.27-Sept.1. ASTRA exhibition at the World Science Fiction Convention, Metropole Hotel, Brighton (see Spacereport, Apr.1988). ASTRA also mounted panel discussions on Space Advocacy and on the proposed PARSEC conference. Copies of "Pioneering the Space Frontier" and "A Meeting with the Universe" left with us for sale. During the setting up, many of our historic posters were stolen, but we eventually received satisfactory compensation, calculated on the basis of the poster theft at Rolls-Royce (see 1978).

Sept.28. Roy Gibson, former Director-General of ESA and now former Director-General of British National Space Centre, accepts Honorary Membership of ASTRA.

Oct.11-16. Duncan Lunan at International Astronautical Federation Congress and Space 87 Exhibition, Brighton, on behalf of US 'Space News Weekly' magazine (see Spacereport, Jan.88). The hurricane which devastated southern England was blowing itself out as the conference ended and it became clear that the British National Space Plan would not be reprieved, leading to Roy Gibson's comment, as the emergency lights died: "I hope you're enjoying this last entertainment Her Majesty's Government has laid on for you."

Oct.30. ASTRA affiliated to National Space Society in USA, by courtesy of Aleta Jackson.
