Jan.19. Archie Roy, 'How Safe Is the Moon?', Airdrie Library.

Mar.9. 'Soviet Mars Exploration', Anders Hansson, Commercial Space Technologies. Airdrie Library was closed by industrial action and the talk took place at the Riggend Restaurant, organised by Danny Kane; likewise Peter Jamieson's on 'Wind Power' the following week.

April. Return of Asgard, edited by Iain Girdwood, with cartoon cover by Lorna Napier for Jim Randolph's visit (see below). Included poem 'The Astronomer's Daughter' by Jennifer Tifft.

Apr.7 - May 2. 'Urban Spacemen' art exhibition at 90's Gallery, Otago St., Glasgow, by courtesy of Matt & Rona Ewart, featuring work of Ed Buckley, Gavin Roberts, Brian Waugh, Sydney Jordan and Tom Campbell; sundials by Richard Robertson; telescopes by John Braithwaite; Waverider model rebuilt by Gordon Dick (now known as Gordon Ross) (see 1989). Tom Campbell Dry Eye Syndrome Appeal launched. Private view sponsored by Uisge Beatha, Woodlands Road (see 1993). Extensive press coverage of exhibition, appeal and Waverider.

Apr.8/5th May. 2nd London branch votes to become an independent Space Discussion Society.

Apr.13-17. ASTRA mounts spaceflight programme at Eastcon 90 science fiction convention, Adelphi Hotel, Liverpool, by courtesy of Lisanne Norman; includes ET encounter simulation scripted by Chris Boyce; talk on the 'Face on Mars' by Chris O'Kane; panel discussion on winged space vehicles; talk by Graham Yates, Jodrell Bank (see below); and 'Shopping Malls on Mars'.

Apr.21. Presidential toast to spaceflight at 90's Gallery, sponsored by West End Bar, Airdrie (see 1993), followed by lecture in Basement Cafe by Jim Randolph, 'United States Plans for Space Exploration', followed by Annual Dinner at the Koh-i-Noor, and by Waverider meeting at the Basement Cafe the following morning. Jim Randolph accepts Honorary Membership.

May 9. AGM at the Fairfield Hall, Pearce Institute. Iain Girdwood stands down from Presidency; Duncan Lunan elected.

June 9. Open Day, Airdrie Public Observatory, with 'Face on Mars' display by Chris O'Kane.

June 24. Death of John Macvey (see 1967 and 1971).

Aug.10. Colin McInnes, G.U. Astronomy Dept., 'Setting Sail for Orbit', Airdrie.

Aug.12. Bus run to Nuffield Radio Astronomy Laboratory, Jodrell Bank.

Aug.13. Duncan Lunan 'Waverider' talk at Space School, Brunel University; repeated following week at World Science Fiction Convention, The Hague.

Oct.13. Regular Glasgow meetings resumed, hosted by Chris O'Kane; discussion meetings on SETI.

Oct.18-19. Gordon Dick (now known as Gordon Ross), Duncan Lunan, Terence Nonweiler, Aleta Jackson (by then editor of "The Journal of Practical Applications in Space") and Jim Randolph at the 1st International Hypersonic Waverider Symposium, University of Maryland, cosponsored by NASA; Gordon gave our joint paper, 'Amateurs' View of Waverider Research'. Followed by a seminar on the history of hypersonic research, organised by Dr. Dick Hallion of the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum.

Oct.26. Graham Yates, Jodrell Bank, 'Galaxy Formation', Airdrie.

Nov.17-21. National Astronomy Week. Mars Watch at Airdrie Public Observatory; photo exhibition and Braithwaite telescopes at the Dome of Discovery, Glasgow, accompanying Renfrew & District Astronomical Society planetarium star shows by Ian Downie; ASTRA lectures by John Braithwaite, Chris O'Kane and Danny Kane.

Nov.23/24. Backup Juno astronauts Clive Smith & Gordon Brooks at Airdrie Library and Dome of Discovery.

Dec.14. Anniversary Dinner, The Heritage, Greengairs.
