Sad though it had been to note the
deaths above, none of them had been active members of ASTRA
at the time. But in January 1993, right at the start of our
40th anniversary year, the winter storms handed us a severe
blow with the loss of Alex and Sheena McIntosh, who were
killed in Edinburgh when a tree fell on to their car. The
only consolation was that their grandchildren, who were in
the car, escaped unhurt.
Alex and Sheena were among the new
members whom we gained in Airdrie as a result of the
Halley's Comet Watch of 1986. From the outset they took an
active part in the Airdrie section, with Sheena becoming
secretary of the branch, covering ASTRA activities for the
local paper, maintaining a scrapbook of Airdrie activities,
and becoming Secretary of ASTRA overall during Iain
Girdwood's term as President. Alex and Sheena supported the
society with fund-raising competitions and raffles, and
particularly tried to involve the younger members and
visitors, especially in projects like the poster competition
and the Moon buggy and lunar landscape for Open Days. Sheena
organised the Anniversary Dinner in 1988 for the 35th
anniversary and in subsequent years, plus other social
events - and all this on top of their commitments to other
societies and social works, so extensive that at their
funeral service ASTRA didn't even get a mention. They are
missed to this day.
