Just before the publication of the 45th Anniversary of ASTRA Spacereport, we learned from Archie Roy that Len Carter had died on 12th November, 1998. Len was one of the major organisers of the British Interplanetary Society (BIS) before the war, and prominent in it's re-creation afterwards; his position as Executive Secretary ensured a major role in BIS decision-making thereafter. As noted in the ASTRA history, he flew up to Scotland in January 1954 to confirm the foundation of the BIS Scottish Branch, and returned in October 1960 to give a talk on 'Are there Limits to Space Exploration?' Len strongly backed the BIS position in the difficulties which arose with the Space and Scotland project in 1963, and it was after a meeting between Len and Andy Nimmo in London that a Scottish Branch decided to become an independent society.

He was actively involved in the production of the 'Journal of the British Interplanetary Society' and its magazine 'Spaceflight', and in 1957 he edited "Realities of Space Travel", an important collection of essays from the Journal, including one by Prof. Nonweiler and one by Dr Overden.

Papers from it were cited as sources in "Man and the Stars" and later ASTRA book projects, including the forthcoming (we hope) "Children from the Sky".

In 1987 he organised the annual conference of the International Astronautical Federation in Brighton, in conjunction with one of a series of biannual spaceflight exhibitions which the BIS held there. In the 1990's he stepped down to Assistant Executive Secretary of the BIS, but remained active in its affairs throughout.
