Oscar's wife Margaret was an
active member of the Scottish branch of the BIS, and a
member of the committee which drew up the first ASTRA
Constitution in late 1963 after the decision had been taken
to found an independent society. The Constitution was
adopted with few amendments and remained in force for eleven
years with only one change meantime. At the adoption meeting
in December 1963 she became Secretary, and continued in the
post for the next 14 years. In ASTRA's early years she and
Oscar hosted regular monthly Council meetings at their home,
and also fireworks parties on November 5th. Margaret took a
major part in putting ASTRA meetings on a weekly basis at
the Hamilton rooms in 1970, and in organising the
exhibitions of 1970, 1971 and 1972 - especially after her
appearance on Scottish Television in 1971, introducing the
space art of Ed Buckley to the public for the first
time.
In 1974 the original
Constitutional Committee of Margaret, Drummond Mansbridge
and myself was reformed to turn ASTRA into a Limited
Company, following the example of the BIS and other similar
groups. The Memorandum and Articles of the new Company were
adopted at an Extraordinary General Meeting in 1974 and have
required no changes since - only four bye-laws have been
adopted in the intervening years and three of them were
dropped when no longer required.
As the 1970's continued worsening
health limited Margaret's participation in ASTRA and Bill
Ramsay took over as Secretary in 1978. Margaret's last
appearance was at the 30th anniversary meeting and dinner in
the Mackerston Hotel in Largs, December 1983; thereafter she
was increasingly house bound and eventually bedridden, but
retained her interest in ASTRA affairs
throughout.
