Paul John Grant (1971-96) died
tragically in a motorcycle accident on 11th August 1996.
Paul joined the Airdrie branch of ASTRA at the age of 17.
ASTRA was thus a major influence in his late
teens.
He studied microbiology at
Strathclyde University, obtaining his degree in 1992. Paul
then went on to work as a Medical Laboratory Science Officer
in the Glasgow area, latterly in the Western Infirmary. He
married Linda Stothers, from Rutherglen, in 1992, and moved
to Carmyle. They had two daughters: Rebecca Eve, in 1994,
and Holly in 1996.
Being a keen rocketry enthusiast,
Paul loved to attend the annual Rocketry Weekend in Largs,
helping the Airdrie team to victory in the Aquajet
competitions of 1991 and 1992. He was also part of the ASTRA
team invited to hold a successful rocketry workshop and
display at the Armagh Planetarium, Northern Ireland, in
1992.
Along with rocketry, he also
enjoyed meteor watches, observing through the Airdrie
telescope, and participating in the annual Airdrie Public
Observatory Open Days. Other loves were home brewery and
'gardening', relaxing in the bath with a good book, and (a
particular favourite) winning every game of Trivial Pursuit
he ever played!
Paul was looking forward to the
future, and was planning on leaving work to study for an
M.Sc.. Paul's friendship and camaraderie, his contagious
laughter and wild humour, conversation and comic songs leave
a lasting impression on us all. He has been sorely
missed.
