Roddy joined ASTRA while taking my science fiction and fantasy writing class, and joined the Council as ASTRA Treasurer in 1995. For an extended period he was a regular attender at Airdrie meetings and he continued to attend Glasgow meetings when he could, although because of his other commitments (to the Labour party, to Gaelic teaching, and many other causes) and because of poor health, he never took up his duties as Treasurer and was replaced at a Council meeting in August 1997. He continued apologetic about not having pulled his weight in this regard, but sad to say, he succumbed to his long-running heart problems on June 9 1998. A large ASTRA and SF Writers' Circle contingent attended his funeral to express their sympathy to his family.
