NOTE TO EDITORS: N96-50

NASA will hold two aeronautics-related news briefings on Aug. 2 and 3 at the annual Experimental Aircraft Association convention in Oshkosh, WI.

LoFlyte Program: Friday at 12:30 p.m. EDT in the EAA Press Tent

NASA and the Air Force will unveil a jet-powered test aircraft built to demonstrate technologies that will allow an aircraft's flight control system to learn by mimicking the pilot's flight inputs. The eight-foot-four-inch remotely-controlled aircraft is a Mach 5 "waverider," a hypersonic configuration that will be flown subsonically in flight tests this August. The programme is managed by the Langley Research Centre, Hampton, VA, and the Air Force Wright Laboratory, with flight testing to be conducted by the Dryden Flight Research Centre, Edwards, CA. Scheduled briefing participants include Jim Hall, National Transportation Safety Board chairman.

General Aviation: Saturday at 11 a.m. EDT in the EAA Press Tent

A NASA and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) general aviation research and development media briefing will consist of the following:

- NASA and FAA General Aviation Revitalisation Team progress (Langley and FAA).

- FAA-led Operation Helistar at Atlanta Olympics (FAA and Langley).

- NASA-led General Aviation Propulsion Program (Lewis).

- NASA-FAA National Design Competition Awards (Langley and FAA).

Participants will include Bob Whitehead, NASA Associate Administrator for Aeronautics and George Donohue, FAA Associate Administrator for Research.

Additional information may be obtained by calling the NASA Public Affairs Office at Oshkosh on 414/235-5424; 5438 or 3587.
