ROLLRIGHT STONES
The Rollright Stones in Oxfordshire, said to be the army of an ambitious
King who was turned into stone by a witch, are up for sale. They are a
stone circle of 77 boulders comprising a group of 5 known as the Whispering
Knights and the remainder who are the King's Men. Pauline Flick, the
private owner, wants to sell for £50,000 or thereabouts.
Included among those known to be interested are National Heritage (boooh!)
and a collective of pagans including Dr Ronald Hutton and Terry Pratchett
(hoooray!). Ms Flick is known to be conscious of the integrity of her
circle and is unlikely to sell merely to the highest bidder.
She is said to favour continued free access and the idea of a Board of
Trustees to oversee the site.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, who supports the Sacred Lands
Project which he inaugurated in April, is also interested, though his
position has come under attack from local vicars because of the pagan
connotations of the site.
SATAN GRAN
Marget Inglis, a Scottish pensioner, who was featured as an orgiastic,
black-magic 'Satan Gran' in the News Of The World of 27th October 1996,
complained to the Press Complaints Commission. The article was apparently
written by two journalists who had joined Ms Inglis' coven as trainees and
had continued under cover for some months.
The article accused the coven of indulging in orgies, black magic, unusual
ceremonies and'vile rituals'.
The Commission did not find there was sufficient distinction between
witchcraft and devil-worship in the public mind to raise a breach of the
code. The complaint was, perhaps unsurprisingly, rejected. Press
Complaints Commission Ref 96-2257.
LYMINGE FOREST
Lyminge Forest, near Canterbury, the site of one of the best-publicised
local eco-actions has, apparently, been spared in an announcement by the
Government. The West Wood part of the forest was being sold by the Forestry
Commission to the Rank Organisation for development as a holiday centre,
including an artificial hilltop lake.
Local archaeologists, researchers and activists have identified six further
burial mounds in addition to the six identified by Rank. There is also a
rare bronze age settlement site in the forest.
The Government announcement on 28th July effectively puts on ice any further
development plans and offers a welcome breathing-space to the tree-house and
tunnel protesters who had been imminelty expecting eviction any moment. The
Forestry Commission had promised Rank that the land would be handed over
with vacant possession by mid-August at the latest.
NEW PF CHAIRPERSON
Pete Jennings (currently PR for the Pagan Federation) will take over the chair of the PF from November. He replaces Tony Meadows.
MENTMORE TOWERS
The HQ of the Maharishi Foundation is up for sale. For 100 rooms, the asking price of £15 million is a snip.
