1. WEBRING DOWN-TIME
THE PROBLEM
(Adapted from WebRing Status Report) On Friday, May 21st, there was an unexpected power outage in the GTE Internetworking San Jose Data Centre where the core WebRing server cluster resides. WebRing servers in other locations continued to operate on a limited basis however this outage resulted in the corruption of some ring configuration files. In the case of the MTS Webring the result was to erase all the sites from the ring (though leaving the queue unaffected). There must have been some sort of crossover from other ring files because the a new site appeared on the ring - "English from the Roots Up" - a site on the Languages and Linguistics ring.
THE SOLUTION
On Tuesday evening, following a few e-mails to and from WebRing, the ring data files were restored to their previous state minus a few sites which had been added during the last few days. These sites were added manually using the information I had available. At this time the ring is once again totally operational.
If you want to check or alter your site details you can do this from the Member Centre page by following the "Edit Your Site Information" link.
So, now you know. Any questions/queries/comments to ridex@easynet.co.uk as usual.
2. MTS WEBRING HAS BEEN ON-LINE FOR ONE MONTH!
A little over one month down the line the Merchant Taylors' School Webring has expanded from having one site to having 14 sites. Although I have to admit that this growth rate of 1400% may not be sustainable (it would mean that next month there would have to be 196 sites on the ring and 2744 sites the month after) this places the ring well on track to meet our target of having 20 sites by the end of term.
To some of you, this first month must have been characturised by being constantly sent requests to change/replace your HTML fragments. For this I apologise but I believe that we now have the problems sorted out and the HTML code should be stable for now on. Anyone who does not have a site with either a) frames or b) a background colour other than white is not affected by this problems and can continue to use the older HTML fragment. However, if anyone does want to update their HTML fragment you can get the latest fragment from the "Edit Your Site Information" link (Member Centre).
3. OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS
WEBRING STATS
The webring statistics system has been changed slightly. Previously, statistics were calculated bi-weekly. They are now calculated daily. Suffice to say that for the next 8 weeks or so the cumulative stats figures will represent a mixture of one day, three day and four day stats and so the actual length of time covered by the stats will vary a little. After the end of these eight weeks stats figures will cover exactly the previous eight week period.
REARRANGING RING SITES
Just to let everyone know. The sites in the ring list are automatically rearranged at random once every seven days so that all sites get an equal exposure towards the top of the list.
NAMES ON ONELIST
When you join the Webring you are automatically subscribed to the MTS Webring mailing list through the &Quot;onelist" service. Due to a slight miscalculation every person added before this week exists only as an e-mail address. For the sake of neatness it would be helpful if people could log on to the onelist service and click on the "change user profile" link in order to fill in your details. This is by no means required but might benefit you later.
You can log on Onelist from www.onelist.com by entering your e-mail address and password. Your password would have been sent to you by e-mail once you joined the list.

6. LIST INFORMATION
To unsubscribe from the MTS Webring information mailing list send a message to ridex@easynet.co.uk containing the word "unsubscribe mtsring-list" and your e-mail address. This is not an automated system so you can tag on any comments you would like. Alternatively, if you know your onelist password you can remove yourself from the mailing list from the onelist page.
This list is used solely for non-commercial purposes and will usually involve one e-mail a week. The MTS Webring update contains announcements from webring members and statistics regarding the webring.
