'Eraser'

The Schwarzenegger shoot'em up, 'Eraser', was released on disc from Warner Home Video. The story (if one considers such a thing important in a picture like this) has Arnold playing a U.S. Marshall who specializes in "erasing" the past of government protected witnesses. When an executive at a defense contractor (a very beautiful executive played by Vanessa Williams) uncovers a plot to sell secret weapons technology to the wrong people, it's the Marshall's job to protect her until she can testify. There are enough plot twists and (sorta) suprises to fill in the gaps between what is essentially a series of action set-pieces. The cast also includes James Caan, Robert Pastorelli and James Coburn.

The transfer of this action slam-fest is excellent. Colors are nicely saturated and appear accurate. The image is smooth and clear with excellent detail. Contrast and brightness are also excellent with very good shadow detail, important as much of the action takes place at night. The transfer has a matted ratio of about 2.35:1, matching the film's theatrical framing.

The soundtrack of 'Eraser' is typical of the genre with the requisite gunshots, explosions, skreeching tires and car crashes, all rendered here with wide dynamics and frequency response. The Dolby Stereo mix is very lively with plenty of directional effects and liberal use of the surround channel. Unfortunately, Warner elected not to include a Dolby Digital track.

The film runs 115 minutes and contains 44 chapters. Considering the running time, the side break is well placed. No trailer or other extras are included. List price is $34.95.

While not quite on the same level with the best of Schwarzenegger's "grown-up" movies, 'Eraser' is a very well made, way better than average actioner. Recommended.
