Acid Rain

Written by the Norwegian Ministry of the Environment. A good site which gives an alternative point of view to our own in the UK, Outline the causes, effects and also some solutions to the acid rain problem.

CSIRO - The Greenhouse Effect An informative site which gives an account of exactly what the greenhouse effect is, including statistical climatic data.
Friends of the Earth Information from the environmental pressure group on their current campaigns.
Lakeview School, Nebraska - Project A good example of students’ work online. The site has sample environmental projects and the many web-links to sites used to carry them out.
UK Division for Sustainable Development Quite an advanced site more suitable to older students which includes examples of successful projects to implement sustainable development.
Environmental Resources for Education  Good quality resources for teachers of 11-16 year olds.
Air Quality  Aimed at younger children, the site contains teaching suggestions for pollution-related topics.
EE Link  Lots of links to teaching resources for the 11-16 age range. Mixed quality but worth a visit.
Greenhouse Effect and Deforestation  Another example of a school project online. A nice site which gives the causes and effects of global warming.
Recycler's World  Want to know how to recycle anything from aluminium to zinc? This is your site!
UK Air Quality  Lots of maps showing the density of many airborne pollutants in the UK.
Amazing Environmental Organisation Web Directory  A great jump-off point when a student is beginning a research project. The site contains the web addresses of many environment-related sites and the postal addresses of more.
English Nature  A nice-looking site which contains information on UK nature reserves and schemes to conserve them.

Science and Environment Like the Friends of the Earth site, lots and lots of information about projects this environmental pressure group are involved in. A slick site.
CNN Earth Pages  News stories with an environmental theme!
Environmental and Sustainable Living  Minimise your energy consumption and do your bit! This site will tell you how, and point you in the direction of other useful sites.
Healthy School Environment An inspirational site which details a US school’s attempts to evaluate the air quality of the campus. Dare you do the same? (Don’t monitor the staff-room though!)

British Geological Survey - Earthquakes!  A rare UK based site with a perspective on earthquakes globally. Did you know ‘quakes took place in the UK too? Look here to find out more.
Tsunami! Lots of multimedia on the scary subject of Tsunamis. Some great example case-studies, although much of the site is rather high-level. Could be differentiated down though.
City of Kobe Home Page For obvious reasons a large proportion of this site is devoted to the terrifying earthquake that took place. For human effects of the ‘quake’, this site is a great jump-off point for students.
NWSFO Severe Weather Safety Guide Great quality photos and useful (?!) information on how to cope with severe weather events.
FEMA Mitigation The American Federal Emergency Management Agency site has many links, educational resources and info on natural hazards which affect people globally. A really comprehensive site.
ABAG Earthquake Maps and Information Another US site with loads of details about ‘quakes in the San Francisco area. Very comprehensive explanations of all of the secondary hazards associated with earthquakes.
Earthquake Information  Bang up-to-date information about all of the latest earthquakes that have taken place globally. If you like maps and earthquakes, go to this site!
Plate Tectonics A great site on the topic. A diverse range of material is available from images, maps etc. A case-study of the Kobe earthquake is available, plus links to other sites on the internet.
National Earthquake Information Centre As the US Geological Association maintains this site, it is up-to-date and slick. Information on virtually everything you could want to know about earthquakes, tectonics and hazards is included with informative supporting images. Give it a visit.
BB's Volcano Home Page Volcano information site, with a skew to Italy.
EQE Disaster Reports Archive Lots of information about lots of different earthquake events.
Volcano World Everybody on the Internet must have been to Volcano World! It great! If you’re studying volcanoes and you don’t visit this site, you’re bonkers! Lots of accessible material your students will love.
Cascade's Observatory Home Page Mt St Helens did Geographers a favour as it’s a great case-study which generated a wealth of material. This site takes full advantage of that and is great. Also info on coping with a disaster.

One World Online  A collection of over 100 development-related organisations in one site. News articles on many topical issues relevant to the subject
Teeside Development Corporation  Urban development is a great issue to examine for student Geographers. This site is informative and accessible, providing a host of material on the UK’s largest U.D.O.
UN FAO  Few organisations could boast the global and holistic vision of the UN. As you would expect this site is a mine of topical information from the Food and Agriculture Organisation. Well presented and with clear hyperlinks. Also a great searchable database.
Cairo Conference on Population and Development A bit high-level, but good for older students or for teachers. This site contains the text from the conference. 
Commission for New Towns in England Not all relevant, but information on greenfield sites and economic growth of urban areas can be found here.  Good when studying settlement too.
Economic Policy Institute  High-level site which contains ideas on the US economy. Not the most interesting topic I admit but one which affects us all globally.
Financial Times  On-line newspapers are increasing in number every week. The FT version boasts a searchable database on the last 30 years worth of publications!
International Monetary Fund If this site were a car it would be a Volvo. Not particularly interesting, but it does its job well. If you had to teach about the IMF then you’d appreciate this site a lot more.
UN Development Program  Topical news and stories regarding development issues. Check out the scary ‘Poverty Clock’!
The Asian Economies Geographers often study Newly Industrialised Countries. This site provides information and links about the NICs in Asia. Lots of statistics useful to students and teachers. 
US Agency for International Development  Which places and organisations is the US supporting with aid? Great links.
Welsh Development Agency Lots of Spam (turn off ‘autoload image’ ). But some relevant information for investment in Wales.
World Health Organisation Topical, up-to-date and worth a visit.
World Bank - Development Economics Home Page Obviously not a subject you’d tackle with younger students, but with older ones this site could stimulate some interesting discussion. Where else would you find information  on this besides that old textbook in the corner?

Bureau of Reclamation  Hydroelectric Power is a great example of a renewable resource. This site is written by a US supplier of HEP and contains info about their scheme and HEP in general.
Electricity Association Home Page  Features and explanations about the UK electricity industry, which is in an interesting state of flux ;-) Ha Ha.
Fossil Energy Homepage  Topical articles, pictures and stats from the Dept of Energy in the US. Has a quiz which is good. A bit hard though.
National Wind Technology Centre  Another renewable resource site. Another quiz. Also a virtual tour of the US research centre.
Tower Colliery This is the last deep coal mine in Wales, an area once dominated by the industry. Obviously a lot of useful history is on this site, and up-to-date news items too. 
National Renewable Energy Laboratory  US based site once again, outlining research into renewable sources of energy.
British Gas North West Zip on your virtual anorak and surf on top this site. It contains a wealth of info on BG NW, such as the service they supply. In fact I’ll save you the time - They supply Gas. To the Northwest.
Centre for Alternative Technology A fantastic place – well worth a real visit! The CAT site is a virtual tour of the real place. Check this site out and then book a trip there
Energy Country Analysis Briefs You want to know about fossil fuels? This is your site. Lots and lots of great information on various countries and the reserves they have. Great for research projects.
Energy Info A site based in the UK (!) which has info on said county’s energy consumption. Once again a good site for research topics in Geography.
Shell Information about the petroleum giant (boo, hiss!) and projects it’s involved in. Obviously a very slick site ;-) a-haha I’m such a gas (giggle!)
UK Atomic Energy Authority Decommissioning and fusion are topics we should all be aware of. A scary site although useful for students to visit nonetheless.
British Nuclear Fuels  Reprocessing plants such as Sellafield are involved in big public relations exercises for obvious reasons. This site is one of those exercises and therefore very informative.
Co-generation Power plants-R-Us. Not a lot else to say really.
Energy Efficiency A great site for students. Has a house imagemap which you can click on to get energy saving ideas.
Hydropower Article  US based site outlining the development of HEP. Well balanced and subjective views throughout.
Shell - Brent Spar Home Page Tch! A damage-limitation site with info on the oil platform owned by Shell.
UK Nuclear Safety Directorate Ever wondered who oversees the safety of UK nuclear power plants? No, me neither but apparently it’s these fellow. Lots of information that soothes and reassures. Could provide students with  an interesting angle on the pro/anti-nuclear debate.
Energy Quest  Aimed at younger, 11-14 year old students, this site is a great intro to the topic. Includes many activities such as quizzes, wordsearches etc. A really nice site.
The Virtual Nuclear Tourist  A global perspective on atomic energy. Great site with great links. Obviously well though out as a web page.
Building a Solar House in Maine A fly-on-the-wall type page that tells you all about a family and their home. If you’re feeling nosy or curious, give this site a visit.
Earthdog Renewable Energy Page  Renewable energy is a hot topic, and rightly so. This essay outlines what sources of renewable energy we have available.
Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Network From the US dept of energy. A suitably slick site from such and organisation.
Solar Radiation Data and Maps  Want to know about how feasible solar power really is? Then visit this site. Can be a bit slow do download at peak times.

GORP - Great OUTDOORS Recreation Page  A wonderful site that covers every conceivable recreational activity you could possibly imagine. Also an extensive archive of place to carry out these activities around the world.
Kenya Web Every aspect of this country is located at this site! If you’re using Kenya as a case-study, whack this site onto your school intranet. Quick and easy to find most information due to clear links.
Bangladesh Big images aplenty, including maps and satellite images. Consequently a useful source of piccies for illustration etc. Also lots on Bangladesh.
Canada's National Parks As you’d expect, a very clear site that covers anything you could possibly want to know. Info on the parks themselves, Canada’s conservation policy etc. Relevant and bang up to date.
Interknowledge Travel Network Information on several countries. The continent of Africa is particularly well detailed.
Peters Projection Map Tutorial Ever been asked by a smart student to explain Peters projection? Visit this site before it’s too late. Very illuminating.
Travel Expo Italy Tourism is the theme of this site. Nice pictures.
World Flags Okay, so again not the most interesting subject. But zip on that anorak, grab that flask, polish your slip-on shoes and mooch on down to this flagtastic database. Just don’t tell anyone you went there.
CIA World Factbook I love this site – it’s always given me heaps of information in statistical form on all the World’s countries. Download all of them and build a resource database! Absolutely essential in your Favourites folder. So, how many runways over 1.5km has Burkina Faso got? Just give me a minute…

Bem-Vindo Ao Brazil Brazil is a wonderfully diverse and beautiful country. This site does it justice, with great photos.
City.Net A fantastic site, although can be slow at certain times. A clickable world map provides the starting point down to surprising detail. Many links to your chosen destination.
Kid's Web Japan Great for 11-14 year olds. Japan is such an interesting country, and learning about it via the Internet is almost as good as going there.
Russian Chronicles If you’re studying Russia, then this diary-style page will be great material.
Uganda - The Pearl of Africa Lots of surprising information about this great place. Be warned though, visit this site and you’ll want to go there!
Lonely Planet Online  Clickable maps are everywhere, and the country information is concise, relevant and entertaining. A visually impressive site that complements project work well. Cut and past into your WP to produce some interesting work.
Andy's Round Britain Quiz  Think you’re good at UK Geography? Well you’re not! Visit this site and prove me wrong! Good light-hearted activity.
Bombay (Mumbai) Immense resource on this fantastic city. History, planning, environment, maps, photos.
Liege Online  We used Liege as a case-study when I did Geography at school. This site would have been useful then, as it gives lots of relevant information.
Shangri-La Home Page The Himalayas have a lure to everyone. The images on this site really do them justice.
Virtual Antarctica I used this site with younger students during a series of work on the icy continent. Worked really well, due to clear links and visual attractiveness.
Virtual Galapagos  What a fragile ecosystem is like to manage is one of the many themes at this site. Also there is the obvious mine of information about the islands themselves. What makes this site great is the layout of the page and depth of information. Worth a visit.
Arabnet Online info on the Arab nations.
Mapquest  Interactivity is the keyword here, and maps are a Geographer’s bread and butter! Log on and enjoy these online gems.
The Best of Asia-Pacific Another geographical region is accessible here with lots of links to SE Asia.
Virtually Hawaii  Great if you use these islands as a case-study. Check accessibility of information before use though.
