The Wider World                   (David Waugh)

If you haven't heard of the legendary David Waugh, then you must have been on a ten year secondment to Mars, as he's currently one of the most popular authors of Key Stage 3, 4 & 5 textbooks in the United Kingdom.  This textbook, aimed at KS4 students provides a well-balanced range of themes, drawing on a wide variety of places in the case-studies.

All of the sections are comprehensive (perhaps with the exception of weather & climate), and the illustrations are pertinent and clear.  Clearly structured questions are included at the end of each section for assessment purposes.

This book contains quite a high level of language and so would be most suited to middle- and higher-ability students.  Less able students would probably require either differentiated versions or a more accessible book.
