I Want To See This Annie Mattygraph
A Cartoon History of the Coming of the Movies

by Stephen Bottomore
Introduction by David Robinson

The danger of being filmed as you take a bath....The cinema spectator with the annoying laugh....Conceited lions being coiffeured for the cameras...The cowboy selling off film rights to his own lynching. These are the themes of just some of the cartoons in this book. From initial anxieties about the Cinematographe in the 1890s, to the rapid growth of the film business to become the world's leading form of entertainment by the First World War, all was fair game for satire. Here we find tone-deaf cinema pianists, moviemad children, and lovers embracing in darkened picture palaces, as well as hypocritical censors, faked war films, and caricatures of early film stars such as Max Linder and Mary Pickford.

This is the only book featuring a large selection of such cartoons from many different counries. They provide a unique insight intoi contemporary reaction to the birth of the movies. Reproduced in colour and black and white with brief introductions to each section, the cartoons are by artists including Heath Robinson, Rube Goldberg, Heinrich Zille, Henriot, Storm Petersen, H.M. Bateman, and many others.

Le Giornate del Cinema Muto, BFI Publishing, 1996

"This collection of cinema-related cartoons from pre-1915 periodicals...[is] a work of significant and lasting value...As a social history resource it is excellent, and the variety of cartooning styles included will make this book invaluable for the historian of the caricature and periodical cartoon as well as the early cinema researcher and enthusiast."
