Victorian Film Catalogues

The W.D. SLADE ARCHIVE is a collection of papers relating to the Cheltenham shoemaker of that name who took up cinematography in late 1896/early 1897. Mr. William Slade purchased a Gaumont 60mm projector (and later a 35mm machine), and with his daughter Mary as assistant, toured with a show of 'Animated Photos'. Among the papers (which are presently being researched for publication) are several rare film catalogues dating from 1897, most of which are reproduced in this booklet for the benefit of film historians, by kind permission of James Offer. Prepared for publication by Stephen Herbert, in association with Colin Harding, National Museum of Photography Film & Television, and Simon Popple, Manchester Metropolitan University.
