Salmon back in the Medway.
A salmon has been caught on the River Medway for the first time in more than a century.
The discovery at Allington is being hailed as a testament to the clean-up of the river which was until recently one of the most polluted in England.
Water quality in the Medway also looks set for further improvements after Southern Water announced on Friday that it is planning to invest 25 million (UKP).
It has agreed to spend the huge sum on improvements to nine sewage treatment works along the river.
The move has been welcomed by the Environment Agency who now have double cause for celebration after its staff netted a 10lb salmon last Wednesday.
They saw two salmon leap out of the water downstream and netted one weighing 10lb. Its larger mate evaded capture but was later found dead.
The netted salmon was returned to the river unharmed.
