The Italianate design of St George's is by Francis Eden (1884-1944) and is based on the pilgrimage chapels of the early Renaissance style in the foothills of the Italian Alps. Building work started in 1933 but was not fully completed until the 1960s.
Pulpit & Processional CrossThe Rood Beam

The pulpit and Processional Cross were designed by John Hayward, who also designed the lectern, priests' stalls & font.
The baldachino above the high altar was dedicated in 1952 and is the work of Sir Stephen Dykes-Bower, adapted from a drawing by Francis Eden the original architect of St George's in the 1930s.
The translation of the inscription on the front is "Thee we adore, O hidden Saviour Thee, Who in Thy Sacrament art pleased to be."

The translations of the latin inscriptions on the rood beam are: (front) "Look unto the Rock whence ye are hewn" and "God forbid that I should glory, save in the Cross of Our Lord". The figures were carved in Italy in the 1930s by Alphonse Nofleur and decorated by Messrs Marus in London
