| In
the field of Primary Education, the Sisters provided
elementary education - "the three R's",
housecraft, needlework and, above all, teaching Catechism
in parish schools. The schools where the Sisters taught
were essentially parish schools. Two or three Sisters
went, usually at the invitation of the parish priest, to
open what were often humble ventures. In the evenings and
on Saturdays the Sisters visited the sick and housebound,
distributed food and clothing. They were "Parish
Sisters" long before that term came in use. The need for Child Care led the Sisters to develop small orphanages at Radford in Oxfordshire and Avon Dassett in Warwickshire. This paved the way for the establishment of the Birmingham Rescue Society, later known as Father Hudson's Homes. For decades the Sisters continued to work there, teaching and nursing. |
