William
Backhouse (1593 - 1662)
A
leading alchemist who also taught Elias Ashmole,
it is the latter who provides the following data
perserved in his autobiographical notes.
The
data given by Ashmole is 1 am 17 January
1593 OS (although 1593 is the year used by him,
rather than 1592) at Swallowfield, Berkshire
51° 21'N. Modern software produces the
following chart and can only be taken as an
approximation. However, Harvey's calculations
result in an Ascendant of 10° Scorpio with
differences of about half a degree on the
intermediate cusps. Harvey provides Ashmole's
planetary positions like so:
Sun
7° Aquarius; Moon 19° Sagittarius; Mercury
25° Aquarius; Venus 6° Pisces; Mars 7°
Sagittarius; Jupiter 9° Capricorn; Saturn 22°
Cancer; North Node 15° Gemini. Harvey does not
provide the positions of the house cusps, and
there seems no way of reconciling the
differences.
