Pilgrims - ‘A Canterbury Tale’
The Old Pilgrims Way passes diagonally through Chilham
Square after leaving the NorthDowns skirting the Castle
grounds via Mountain Street and then following on through
Old Wives Lees to Canterbuyr. It was originally a Neolithic
track dating from 2000BC and was used by drovers moving
sheep and cattle. Later it was used by pilgrims travelling
from Winchester to pray at the tomb of Thomas-a-Becket at
Canterbury. Most recently in 1947 a
film was made by Mark Powell called a Canterbury
Tale, telling the story of a family who made a pilgrimage to
Canterbury during the war. Various shots were filmed in and
around the vicinity of Chilham with many parts being played
by members of the parish.
