St Mary's Chilham

People: St Augustine

St Augustine died 605 AD-

There is some evidence that the bones of St Augustine were brought to Chilham Church to protect them from the plundering of Canterbury Cathedral soon after 1535 when Henry VIII made himself head of the English Church. An ancient Sarcophagus with a battered cross on its lid (a sign of the interred being a member of the church) can still be seen in the church, but the bones are now buried elsewhere.604.
