Interests and Objectives
My first programming language
was Pascal which was the structured programming language
of choice at Kent the year I enrolled. Since then I have
added C and C++ to the list of languages studied
within a course structure. As and when the need has arisen
I have taken the time to learn other languages such as VBScript
as involved in ASP, SQL, JavaScript,
Java and Visual Basic 6. I have taught a class
in VB5 to first year university students whilst completing
my final year of PhD research.I find myself interested in
web page design for several reason, not least of which is
my desire to create as well as program. I have always been
interested in artistic subjects as well as the sciences,
as my Alevel choices suggest.
My outside interests include,
drawing, painting, creative writing and calligraphy, which
have all lead me to very much enjoy the planning and creation
of web pages. I enjoy the design stage, and relish the challenge
of the programming under the surface. When I first became
interested in web pages I used a simple editor to create
them, and am familiar with HTML coding by hand. I
have in recent months, however, used Microsoft Front-page,
Hotdog and Dreamweaver 4 to govern
sites I have created. I am familiar with Paint Shop Pro
and have experience with Adobe Photoshop, Corel
Draw 8 and various other packages. I use both mouse
and tablet input to create graphics, and have a working
knowledge of colour safe pallets for multiple browsers.
I have designed many web pages but the most recently I have
engaged in the design of a web site dedicated to the TV
show the New Professionals: http://CI5Ops.co.uk .

ITN Space Experiment
While still at school
I was involved with an experiment my school was preparing
to go into space on the NASA shuttle. The original experiment
of a crystal garden was proposed by four girls from several
years above me in a competition run by ITN. Those of us
who continued the work after the original team left for
University learnt many things. We worked designing bracket
to hold the experiment in its box, how the testing
procedures were carried out, and most importantly how to
work in a team.
The experiment was launched
in 1991 on the Shuttle Discovery STS47, and by then it consisted
of two individual investigations into crystal gardens in
micro gravity and Liesgang Rings in micro gravity. Watching
the Shuttle take off from the Kennedy Space Centre is one
of the highlights of my life. On its return to Earth
the experiment was exhibited in the Science Museum and toured
several sites in the country. It was hoped that the experiment
would also fly on the Juno project, but because of funding
problems this did not occur.
