Criteria
for membership:
- Your
page has something on it to do with Highlander: The
Raven, the spinoff series from Highlander the Series
staring Elizabeth Gracen and Paul Johanson (for more
fun and games to do with HL:tR check out my Raven
subsection to this site),
- or
your site is a directory of Highlander: The Raven related links.
Sites that simply have a couple of links will
not be admitted. Whether a site is a links
directory or a site with a few links is a judgement
call on my part. It will depend on the site presentation
and the number of links it has whether I admit a links
site or not. If I deny your site entry you have one
chance to appeal and convince me to change my mind,
after that my descision is final unless the site goes
through some major changes.
- Slash
only or Adult only sites should place a warning in the
description of their site.
- Site
that are considered inflammatory, offensive (this does
not mean erotica, but it does mean porn), or support
hate campaigns of any kind be they racial or anything
else will not be admitted.
- I
would prefer it if the URL you give is the URL of the
page where the webring will be, but I know this is not
always possible. Hence the URL may be to another page,
but on that page there must be a link to the webring
page with the word WebRing in the description. If your
site does not pass the webring checker I will not allow
it to become active until it does. Please be aware that
sites using the link method affect the ring navigation
rating in that they are considered not as easy to navigate.
The higher the navigation rating the more likely people
are to join the ring and hence bring traffic to existing
members, so think carefully before not placing the code
on the registered URL.
Featured
Sites:
There
is a new feature at WebRing: Featured sites. At the top
of the Ring Hub page there are three slots for features
sites within the ring. I have decidied to use them. The
first slot will always be for this page, but I'm putting
the other two up for grabs. I must warn you that I am
sole judge of this, but you are welcome to nominate your
site or another site in the ring for one of the positions.
I may choose sites that have not been nominated, but I
am more likely to notice sites that have been. If you
think your site is worthy of one of these slots or you
have seen another site in the ring that you think should
be at the top then drop
me a note and tell me why. If I agree I will place
the site in the queue for the spots, or I will tell you
why I will not. Each chosen site will stay in the featured
sites list for at least one week and after that until
there is another nominee to replace them.

Steps
for Membership:
If
you are a webring pro and do not need instructions on
how to join
click here, otherwise read on.
- You
will require a WebRing ID. If you do not have one, don't
worry when you click the join link at the bottom of
the page the servers at WebRing will take you through
the simple step of setting one up. It takes about a
minute.
- Next
fill in the form and click the "next" button:
| Field
Title |
What
to fill in |
Enter
Your Site Address (URL)
|
In
this field type the full URL of the page which
you wish to be in the ring, i.e. the page within
your site that is most appropriate for the ring.
This is the page where visitors will enter your
site using the ring and should hence have links
back to the rest of your site (if there is any
more of it :-)). |
Title
Your Site (50 characters or less)
|
In
this field type whatever you wish to call your
site. It can be the name you have actually given
the page, or a name that is more appropriate to
the ring. If it is the name you have actually
given the page it is easier to track in the future,
but the choice is up to you. |
| Describe
Your Site (400 characters or less) |
In
this field type a short description of what is
in your site. It is always a good idea to make
the reason for joining the ring the most prominent
feature in this description. For example with
this ring mention your Highlander: The Raven content first
and whatever is in the rest of your site next. |
- You
will then be taken to a page where you can check your
submission for spelling etc. If it is not correct hit
the back button, edit your entry and once again click
the "next" button. It is always a good idea
to check the URL at this point by clicking on it just
to make sure you have typed it correctly. Once you are
satisfied with your entry click the "Submit"
button to enter your site into the ring queue. The page
you will be taken to has a link for you to downlad the
code for the ring via the navigation code wizard. If
you need to find this wizard in the furture follow the
instructions below.
- Next
click the "My Rings" link at the top of
the page.
- Click
"View Ring Sites" from the left menu.
- Click
on the Wizard link next to the relevant site entry
- this will analyse your page and probably answer
any problems you may be having.
- Click
on site management
- Click
"Get Navigation Code"
- When
you have your navigation code this is the point where
you have to make a decision. There are two choices for
the code you place on your site (both can be seen at
the bottom of the page
- the second one is the Javascript, the first one is
the HTML):
- the
Javascript SSNB code -
- the
advantages of this are:
- you
only have to have one piece of code on your page
even if you have multiple WebRings for that page;
- when
updates are made to the ring graphics/functionality
your page is automatically updated;
- you
never have to edit the code (unless there are
major server changes or something similar which
happen only once in a blue moon, and would only
mean replacing the entire code not editing it).
-
The disadvantages of the code are:
-
it is Javascript so if someone does not have this
enables on their browser the webring will not
work for them
- if
the load on the WebRing server is high there may
be a slight delay in loading your page when someone
surfs in : this has been reduced greatly by the
display only one ring method for the stacks, but
may still occur if there is any major maintenance
going on.
- When
using the javascript SSNB I recommend setting the
"Show Single NavBar" option so that when
users surf into the page they will only see the navbar
of the ring they are surfing or the navbar of the
first ring in the stack. This reduced load times for
large stacks and improved performance. To set this
property do the following:
- Go
to "My Rings"
- Go
to "View Web Sites"
- Click
on the U# for the stack you wish to change
- Check
the box next to the single navbar option
- Click
Save Changes
- the
HTML version of the ring code -
- The
advantages of this code are:
- it
works in all browsers;
- there
is no delay from the server in loading the page,
because the code is static and local;
- If
you are familiar with html you may edit the
layout of this code, all I require is that you
keep the graphic and all the links: how you
arrange them is up to you. However, please be
aware that the code for thsi ring is an image
map, so changing it is not as easy as it is
with my other rings. If you do not have the
correct links on your HTML your page will not
be made active.
- The
disadvantages are:
-
if anything changes in the ring like ring homepage
or ring manager your code will not reflect these
changes until you edit it manually,
-
you have to have one set of code for each ring
which is labour intensive.
- To
use the Javascript SSNB cut and paste the code shown
in the window on the "Get Navigation Code"
page onto your site. It will appear something like this:
<script
language=javascript
src="http://ss.webring.com/navbar?f=j;y=tasha_ddrake;u=10027229">
</script><noscript><center>
<table bgcolor=gray cellspacing=0 border=2 bordercolor=red><tr>
<td><table cellpadding=2 cellspacing=0
border=0><tr><td align=center>
<font face=arial size=-1>This site is a member
of WebRing.
<br>To browse visit <a href="http://ss.webring.com/navbar?f=l;y=tasha_ddrake;u=10027229">
Here</a>.</font></td></tr></table></td></tr></table>
</center></noscript> |
- DO
NOT use the code above, it is an example
only and is not customised for your pages or this ring.
Make sure you use your own "Get Navigation Code"
link.
You may place the code in one of two places:
- The
page of the registered URL (the one you typed into
the submission form). I would prefer this option.
- A
dedicated webring page somewhere on your site. If
you do this you must
place a link on your registered page that links
to your webring page with the word "Webrings"
in the title/description of the link.
The navbar for The Highlander: The Raven Ring is
formatted to a certain size, other navbars that are
of the WebRing default style are not a specific size
and will expand to the full width of the page. If
you do not wish the navigation bars to expand all
the way across your page then place them inside an
html table:
<table><tr><td>
... code for the webring ... </td></tr></table>
If you do this the table will collapse to the width
of the largest of the nav bars and you will not have
them spanning the whole page. Even if you are only
adding The Highlander: The Raven Ring it is a good
idea to do this when you first place the SSNB code
on the page because if you add more webrings in future
you will not have to re-edit the page.
- To
use the HTML code ignore the SSNB code and go to the
bottom of the page. There you will find a line that
looks like this:
"Members who wish to use the HTML version of this
nav bar should go here."
Click the "here" and go to the next
page. Copy and paste the code in the text area on this
page into your site. It should look something like this:
| <div
align="center"><table border=1 align="center"
cellspacing=0 bordercolor="#ff3300" width="320"><tr><td><table
border=0 cellspacing=0 bgcolor="#ffffcc"
width="100%"><tr><td width="1%"><a
href="http://P.webring.com/wrman?ring=crescentmoon&addsite"
target=_top><img src="http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~tasha27/ffimage.gif"
width="126" height="80" alt="Highlander: The Raven" border="0"></a></td><td
valign="top" align="center"><font
face=arial size=-2 color=#000000> by <a href="http://T.webring.com/cgi-bin/profile?y=tasha_ddrake">tasha_ddrake</a></font><br><font
face=arial size=-1 color=#000000> [ <a href="http://P.webring.com/wrman?ring=crescentmoon&addsite"

target=_top>Random</a> ]<br>[ <b><a

target=_top><< Prev</a> | <a href="http://P.webring.com/go?ring=crescentmoon&id=8&next"
target=_top>Next >></a></b>
]<br>[ <a href="http://P.webring.com/go?ring=crescentmoon&id=8&sprev"
target=_top>Skip Prev</a> | <a href="http://P.webring.com/go?ring=crescentmoon&id=8&skip"
target=_top>Skip Next</a> ] </font></td></tr></table></td></tr></table></div>
|
Once
again DO NOT use the
example code above, the code at WebRing will be customised
for your site and for this ring.
You may place the code in one of two places:
- The
page of the registered URL (the one you typed into
the submission form). I would prefer this option.
- A
dedicated webring page somewhere on your site. If
you do this you must
place a link on your registered page that links to
your webring page with the word "Webrings"
in the title/description of the link.

Promise
from the Ring Manager:
I aim to process
all ring applications within 24 hours during the week
and on the Monday if you submit at the weekend. The WebRing
system emails me whenever someone submits so I know that
your site is waiting. The only reason I will not do this
is if I am on holiday or I'm ill or something along the
same lines. If you have not heard from me in two weeks
after your application the likelihood is something has
gone wrong. This is not likely to happen often, but you
never know, occasional hiccup happen even in the best
of systems. In this instance
email me with
- your
site title
- your
Site URL
- your
WebRing ID
- and
your Ring ID
as
they appear in the "Webring: New submission to Highlander: The Raven" email that was sent to you when
you submitted your site. I will them do my best to find
out what has gone on. If you did not receive this email
then
- a)
Check your WebRing account entry to make sure you have
entered a valid email address
- b)
If the email is correct, contact
me and I'll try and help
If you have any other problems with joining the ring
please let
me know and I'll do my best to help. We were all
WebRing newbies at one time so don't be afraid of asking
stupid questions, just make sure you've read this page
first.
