Welcome to The Scarecrow's guided tour Inside the
Artesian Well Pump House.
The large horizontal wheel was turned by a donkey. The vertical
wooden teeth individually driven into this large wheel engage the
much smaller metal wheel you can see on the left.
There is a small wooden flight of stairs leading to the first
floor. This is now empty but used to store food for the donkey.
Two close ups of the vertical metal driven wheel. This wheel
drives a crank shaft operating two rods descending to the water pump
bellows 79 feet below. At about 40 feet down there are horizontal
shafts complete with its own family of bats.
