Ronald George Kersley 1916 - 1983

Ronald George, born 1st December 1916, was the first son of George Thomas Kersley and Florence Emily Roberts, whose residence at this time was 18 Woodstock Road Sheffield 7. (on the opposite side of the road George Thomas's sister Lilian lived with her husband and family). Ronald George was brought up by his mother for the first three years of his life, as his father, George Thomas was serving in the Army during the First World War (The Great War) in France.

Ronald George's early years were spent around the Nether Edge area of Sheffield. His schooling took place a few streets away from Woodstock Road. He left school at 14 years of age.

When he reached the age of 16 years, Ronald George, enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps, on a regular enlistment, on the 14th October 1933. This was the time of the Great Depression, and the were very few people in work.

After his initial training at Aldershot, he was posted to the Transport Branch RASC in February 1934, and then to 35 Company RASC in July 1934, where he served until October 1935. He was then posted to 5 MT Company RASC, where he remained until March 1938. During the 3 years with 5 Company, he saw service in Cairo/Mersa Matrum/Palestine/Cairo,(Egypt). He was then posted to 66 Company RASC at Abbassia,Egypt, until April 1939. From there he returned to the UK, and was stationed with 15 Company,RASC. at The Infantry Barracks,Fulford, York, where he met and married Winifred Gamble, on the 5th August 1939.

In the September 1939, after only being married for one month,15 Company RASC together with Ronald George, were sent to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). This was the start of the Second World War. He was wounded in one of the early battles which occurred during October 1939 and was hospitalised at the Military Hospital at LA-BAULE which is near to NANTES. He was visited in hospital in France by Winifred, his wife, and both his parents, courtesy of The British Red Cross.

After spending 6 months in hospital, he was evacuated to the UK on medical grounds on the 5th March 1940 and discharged from the Army on medical grounds on 2nd July 1940.

Ronald George's service with the colours was from 14th October 1933 to 2nd July 1940. He served in Egypt from 1st November 1935 to 28th April 1939 and with The British Expeditionary Force France from 14th September 1939 to 5th March 1940.He was awarded the following medals,1939/45 Star, 1939/45 War Medal, 1939/45 Defence Medal.

On his discharge from the Army, Ronald George and his wife Winifred lived with his parents at 9 Strelly Avenue,Sheffield 8., where Trevor (Jan 1941) and Brian (Dec 1942)were both born and where they lived until 1948. During this time Ronald had various War related jobs. After the War was over Ronald worked for Sheffield Forge Masters as an inspector in the production of steel.

In July 1958, Ronald together with his wife and family moved to Easingwold,York, to take over the licence and the running of The Angel Hotel public house. After less than a year there Winifred died.

Ronald remained a widower for six years then he met and married Lilian Joan Harr-Gadon (Powls). They left the public house trade in 1966, when Ronald took up nursing at the local Mental Health Hospital, Claypenny in Easingwold, where he was a Staff Nurse.

Ronald had to take early retirement following a heart attack and died on 29th May 1983, and is buried in Easingwold Parish Churchyard.
