Henry IV Hemry was born in 1367, son of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster. He was also known as Henruy of Lancaster and Henruy Bolingbroke. From 1387 to 1390 he was a leader of the party that opposed his cousin King Richard II. After fighting with the Teutonic Knights and a pilgrimage to Jerusalem Henry allied himself with Richard but later was exiled in 1398 for six years. Richard promised Henry would not lose his inheritance but when Henry's father died Richard confiscated Henry's estates. Henry raised an army, invaded England, captured Richard who later died. Henry became king in 1399. The following year Henry supressed a revolt of nobles. Henry was king during the Welsh rebellion led by Owain Glyndwr.
